I created a miniature model depicting an example of a room from the novel Brave New World in the “Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre.” The scene depicts a conditioning room for an artist. The room is designed to overload the subject's mind into thinking only of art. In the book, there are many other rooms in the centre such as this one only; other conditioning tools are used to turn subjects on to another line of profession.

I took inspiration from Huxley’s descriptions of these rooms, very simple, clean, and white. However, I also added my own ideas because the novel doesn't include a conditioning room for artists. I thought this scene would give me more creative license to play with what the room would have in it. 

This conditioning center is an example of the ongoing themes of “community, identity, and stability” as they contrast with individual freedom. Everything in this society is in a controlled environment. Using the medium of model-making is the best way to convey the double meaning I see in the project: It’s not only a depiction of a room in the facility that raises the children to condition them to be what they intend them to be, but this also represents how boxed in their society is, how controlling. This is why I handcrafted everything in this scene, similar to how everything about their world is man-made, and nothing is natural. These rooms are also how everything gets started. The most controlled part of the society is their upbringing and that snowballs into the adults being completely unaware that they have no freedom.
